Benidorm Re-imagined: Urban Acupuncture as Antidote to the All-inclusive Leisure Phenomenon Part 2 Project 2019 Jian Jun Lim University of East London London | UK As an alternative to the existing all-inclusive offers across Benidorm, the project unfolds the potential of utilising in-between residual urban voids as area of opportunity for inventing new typology for future densification of Benidorm within the nature of the repetitive gated urban blocks. It aims to tackle existing issues of limited land for urban expansion land and lack of affordable housing while giving back the control of the local economy and holiday rental to local people. The scheme offers a reduced rental costs for local residents in exchange for their commitment to rent out part of their homes as temporary accommodation according to the change of seasonality. By contrasting the un-flexible nature of the adjacent hotels that a major part of the year remain empty, the project utilises the dichotomy of “owned” and “shared” spaces to cater various different densities of local people and temporary visitors throughout the year. With housing as the core programme integrated with other flexible living and working spaces, this hybrid architectural typology embodies an alternative vision for future densification of Benidorm.
