A Prototype for Better Living in Macau, China Part 2 Project 2019 Nell HewettElizabeth Cross University of Plymouth | UK The Iao Hon neighbourhood of Macau, China is one of the densest places in the world and faces a number of socio-economic and environmental challenges. This project aims to address the most pressing concerns of resident’s poor physical and mental wellbeing by offering a healthier, more inclusive way of living in a dense urban environment. The scheme draws on the culturally based idea of ‘stretching space’ from inside to outside, public to private, open to closed. These notions have been explored using a rigorous methodology of model iterations using wire mesh to represent the existing building frame, clay to illustrate inhabitation and existing activity and wooden sticks to show possible literal or conceptual additions.The proposal involves re-planning the ground floors to provide public and community spaces and remodelled dwellings on the upper floors. A greened wind tower will be inserted into the central courtyard gathering space to improve environmental comfort. Internal and external facade and deck systems provide residents with much-needed additional living space and an area to encounter others.The resultant scheme is a series of simple interventions that could realistically be employed to provide a prototype for better living in Macau.
