In the search of alternatives that propitiate the approach of the rural communities to a sustainable environment, we found in El Yunque -settlement, located in Colombia’s coffee region- the appropriate place to develop a model of housing to give an answer to our proper reality.

The proposal explores the use of environmental technologies in rural housing, to strength traditional knowledge, and the efficiently use of available resources. Human, natural, patrimonial, cultural, handling of organic residues, and the use of native vegetable species like bamboo, ideal to build light but strong edification, without implication of high costs.

The project joins three steps of design (information, analysis, and synthesis) being the final result a housing model thought as an articulator to habitat. It also proposes the growth and transformation of the settlement centre supported in the different possibilities of progressive development allowed by the proposed model.

The work presented here: "Environmental Technologies applied to rural housing. Study case El Yunque" is a graduation work realised in the context of three relevant aspects in this conclusive stage in the architect formation in our school El Cable.

First, the desire to approach the rural country knowledge, the inclusion of social and economic reality, sharing the complexity lived there, with the community, and with other disciplines interacting there as complementary academic processes.

Second, the purpose to face technologic inquires expressed by the site, its ecological system, the cultural tradition, the vernacular architecture, the region materials used in time (bamboo, wood, soils, etc.), confronting and reinterpreting passive energetic alternatives in the tropic particle cycles, of climatology, recicling and sustainibility.

Third, to think habitat integrally and especially in housing as integration with site, takes in this work a meritorious relevance. The paradigm in architectures formation, now a times globalise, leaves apart housing as an essential thematic.

It is presented here to consideration a grade work away of formal speculations, open to continuity motivations, disposed to interpret architecture beyond the limits some times interpose by the discipline.
