The moving project

Part 2 Project 2003

The 'Moving Project' focused on the consolidation of UEL in the Docklands. The brief to design the extension for the remaining faculties resulted in an urban strategy which fragmented the programs and displaced them across the site. Spaces (most of which are public) are formed between the fragments. These spaces attempt to puncture the social and physical barriers on the site by bridging over major transport infrastructure, and providing access to shared facilities, while connecting Beckton with the Royal Docks. The proposed development provides teaching facilities and office space for the university, while at a more public level provides business start-up space, commercial and retail space along with shared community facilities. Specific programs are situated on critical edges of the site in order to appropriately negotiate them. As a whole, the institutional estate disintegrates into a more transparent and public space.

Kanishka's project is outstanding in it's handling of complexities within a range of scales, at the strategic and spatial level from urban to furniture design. His project has a very strong social underpinning combined with design flair and material rigour resulting in spaces and buildings that are both tough and deeply humane.
