The proposal for the new Bow Boys School addresses the presence of the heavily trafficked public route of Bow Road by considering the potential to share communal facilities of the school with members of the public. The scheme is concerned with the need to provide adequate outdoor space for recreation and sport on a confined urban site, whilst also making the distinction between formal and informal teaching spaces. Specialist and informal classrooms are arranged within an inhabited landscape, while more flexible teaching spaces occupy a separate building volume above the terrain, negotiating between the scales of the urban context.

This project investigates the need to balance densification with a need for recreation and sport space in school buildings. The school is divided into two parts, each responding to its context and linked by an undulating landscape. The tall block provides indoor sports and communal facilities at street level for public use out of school hours, the low single storey string of classrooms enclose outdoor recreational space for school use. The subtlety of the scheme is in the resolution of this outdoor space which through the scheme’s roofs links and blurs the boundary between work and play, city and landscape.
