The University Sports and Recreation Centre

The idea was to create a facility for various extra curricular activities that were previously underplayed due to lack of availability or encouragement.

The following 2 principals were thus followed:

1. Organize several activities around a common interaction area. This common area could be in the form of a open courtyard/terrace/atrium or even a snack court/restaurant etc.

2. A single walkway that runs through the site and intrudes subtly into the various spaces thereby ensuring that the user sees other spaces even while his focus lies on a particular activity.

The University Sports and Recreation Centre

Manipal is primarily a university area with housing areas, bank headquarters and industrial area in the outskirts. It is a thriving fast developing town. The sports centre is aimed at attracting the youth to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It also meant for a better social and community interaction between large cross section of the society. The site is a highly contoured however the university has identified it for the project due to its ideal location. The response to site, user groups, and play of built and open spaces was the focus of the studio.
