Evolution of a building. The unexplored potential of Sugar factory. Sofia Part 2 Project 2013 Vladislav Velkov University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy | Bulgaria This project is intended to save an iconic cultural monument in crucial current state, still having the potential for adaptation and connection with the contemporary urban context. This will lead to a better life standard in the local area and will help for the sustainable development of the cultural life in Sofia.The proposed solution for Cultural center defines balance between the problems of the site, the needs of the society and the architectural and historical values of the complex of Sugar factory and its context.The proposed functions for the transformation of this industrial heritage are grouped in 3 main parts:- Social center /acts locally for educating the minor groups in the area combining urban and rural functions as ’’community gardens’’- Youth center / needed as an alternative to the so called ’’culture of shopping malls’’- Creative art center / acts for the whole city, combining the unique opportunities for artists to work, exhibit and live at one place.A key element for the project is the chosen approach for preservation and connection between the parts of the building that are still standing and those that are already gone.Based on the main characteristics and values of the monument, the project strives to save and preserve the main elements that define the appearance of the whole cultural monument such as: - the characteristic roof silhouette, the archetypes of modular structure and the proportions of spatial appearance inside and outside.- The approach of continuity and symbiosis is chosen. - Symbiosis on various levels, leading to the opportunity to distinguish and connect at the same time, marking the importance of the whole ensemble and its special features.That is done by remaking the lost modules with one basic element-steel frame, based on the proportions found in the authentic appearance of the building, leading to architecture that changes with the point of perspective view, lights and shadows. Thus the reconstructed parts are done in a way suitable for various scenarios, marking the connection with the present, turning the Sugar factory from a lost ruin to a uniting public factor.
