Decelerating the Flow

Part 2 Project 2014

The main idea of the project is shaping the architectural landscape through the concept of decelerating the flow, as a process, which occurs in-between dynamic and static nature of city configurations.

The spatial context in question is the space of simultaneous flows of diversified dynamic characteristics of the city, surrounding the former railway corridor. The space of the architectural intervention is defined by differential emptiness between a highly urban cityscape and a riverside with the open block of housing. The aim was to transform this void into resilient, permeable system absorbing existing simultaneous flows (city centre, traffic, housing, riverside) in a way in which a boundary becomes a connection.

This study of shaping the void into an architectural landscape is conducted trough three specific spatio-temporal modulations: accumulation, contraction and fold.

Accumulation, as a temporal method, refers to architectural program, in which deceleration is defined as a process of accumulating events in space with a decreased intensity of movement. Architectural program, hosted in between traffic (vibrant) and housing (stagnant), is a hybrid structure hosting a rail station overlapped with a hotel, defining a temporary residence, a stagnation in movement.

Contraction is used as a spatio-temporal method in which both time and space get out and than get back into the continuity of flow. It is a change that coexists with both past and future of the continuity.

Fold, as a spatial method, creates permanent reversible dialog of the object and terrain, interior and exterior, dynamic and static nature of the context. Spatiality adopts the meaning of becoming, in which nothing is definite, but rather in a constant state of exchange.

Hotel with a railway station is also a result of strategic position of this location in reference to city center, the nearness of the river, connection to the airport and other important railway stations. The former railway corridor is revived and incorporated into a newly developing city public transportation system. Furthermore, the hotel including the railway station has a dual nature- it is both a transit hotel in the city center and a resort hotel on the riverside.
