Tilling the Prado: A Furrow of re- Construction

The excavated landscape offers a unified system of protection for Havana’s culture, buildings and people. The reinstatement of Cuba’s National Art Schools into the city centre preserves its rich culture through dance, music and art education, operating in tandem with workshops that craft the building materials required to reconstruct Havana’s eroding architecture, and simultaneously, the landscape acts as a bilge tank and point of refuge during flood.

: Rebuilding the city: the Cut offers an interdependent and reciprocal threefold system of protection of Havana’s culture, buildings and people.
The Projection of Light: shadows become tools through which to dictate space and tectonic conditions
Conditions of the Cut: a series of distinct architectural elements, the Skin, the Husk, the Walkway, the Ramp, the Vessel and the Cast are layered upon the Prado in response to differing conditions of programme, cultural context and environment.

Concurrent Exchanges: the architecture is about the impression of one working space on the other whilst being understood as an extension of two types of city-making.
Reciprocal Environments: all aspects of the environmental concerns are tied back to the reciprocity between construction and performance.
The Bilge Tank: the cut acts as a bilge tank for the city and a point of refuge for residents, encourging flood water away from Havana’s unstable buildings and into the cast, agitated landscape whose materiality and structure are capable of dealing with l
The Performance Refuge: a series of Gallerys and Theatres rise above the cut of the landscape becoming points of refuge for people, materials and tools.
