Skidmore Owings & Merrill Foundation
The Skidmore Owings and Merrill Foundation is a long-standing sponsor of the RIBA President's Medals, having supported these student awards since 1996 by awarding the SOM Foundation Travelling Fellowships. Judging panels organised by the SOM Foundation to assess nominations to the RIBA President's Medals have included Ian Ritchie, Ken Shuttleworth, Amanda Levete, Kevin Carmody, Nigel Coates, and many others.
The Skidmore Owings and Merrill Foundation was founded in recognition of the need to help young architects to broaden their education and instil them with a heightened sense of the profession's responsibility to improve the built and natural environments. Over the years the Foundation has expanded its Travelling Fellowship Awards Programme to include Interior Architecture, Urban Design and Structural Engineering as well as the Building Systems Technology Research Grant and its United Kingdom awards. The Foundation wishes to encourage excellence in architectural education; and by encouraging students to compete for these awards, the Foundation is able to move further toward its goals.
