Don't just hope for a better life. Buy into one. A Critical analysis of Idealised Domesticity

Part 2 Dissertation 2016
Ruth Sidey
Newcastle University | UK
Through analysing Nigella Lawson’s kitchen, this dissertation unpacks the discrepancies that exist between consumer aspirations and the promise of social mobility. The study traces the development of idealised domestic interiors - and their role in creating, and supporting, consumer cultures – to conclude that Nigella’s performance masks an uncomfortable truth. The ‘perfect’ lifestyle remains in the idealised, unachievable realm. But we are encouraged to try; and, more importantly, to buy.
