The Modern Planning of Tripoli: A critical analysis of the Libyan capital’s 20th century masterplans using GIS

Part 2 Dissertation 2017
Mahmud Tantoush
Manchester School of Architecture Manchester | UK
This dissertation investigates the impacts of regime change and political events on the urban morphology of Tripoli. Such events resulted in the importation of western planners during the monarchy of Idris and socialist planners during Gaddafi’s “Jamahiriya”.

A new methodology utilising Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was adopted involving the computerisation of masterplans and maps and quantitative computational analysis, creating a narrative of planning and urban change.
