An Exploration of the Contrasting Temporalities of Two London Galleries

Part 1 Dissertation 2019

In both galleries, a new architectural system honours the functionalist aesthetics of the existing building, appropriating the symbols that once described an architectural past. Utilitarian features such as the brick chimney that once billowed smoke and the saw-tooth roof that prevented the overheating of machines are stripped of their original duty. The cycle of taste has changed, these structures are no longer synonymous with the production of labour and hardship, instead, we admire their architectonic qualities, their industrial past is disregarded and has been replaced by the whimsy of the contemporary art world.
