This dissertation repositions urban greenways for hot-arid cities, where extreme climate fundamentally reshapes public space use. Using Wadi Hanifa in Riyadh as a case study, the research challenges the direct transfer of temperate greenway models and instead develops a climate-responsive framework grounded in local realities.

A mixed-method approach combining literature, expert interviews, and user surveys reveals that thermal comfort is the defining factor shaping spatial use, with shading, microclimate design, and seasonal adaptability emerging as critical. The study also exposes key gaps between theory and practice, including car-dependent access, centralized governance, and operational limitations.

Despite these challenges, Wadi Hanifa demonstrates the potential of large-scale ecological restoration and continuous landscape infrastructure in a desert context.

The research advances a set of guidelines tailored to hot-arid environments, integrating environmental performance, mobility, governance, technology and user experience. By bridging global theory with regional specificity, it offers a transferable model for resilient, climate-adaptive greenways in rapidly urbanizing arid cities.
