'Extraction' highlights the global disparity between the geographies of material extraction and those of material consumption, celebration, and architectural production, while exposing the ways in which the social and environmental consequences of extraction are frequently obscured from public view. By adopting the familiar format of a children’s card game, the project makes these complex relationships accessible to a broad audience and encourages engagement across different age groups and levels of expertise.

The game establishes an interactive framework through which players participate in a pedagogical exploration of extractive practice while maintaining the competitive dynamics characteristic of traditional card games. Extraction consists of two decks of playing cards. The first, Holes in the Ground, documents 36 of the world’s largest open pit mines, while the second, Headquarters, presents 12 corporate headquarters belonging to multinational mining companies. Accompanying instructions and methodological material communicate the research framework underpinning the project and provide guidance for discussion and gameplay. A supporting map visualises the geographical dispersal of the mines, their ownership structures, and the corporate locations that control them.

As a critical medium, Extraction communicates the spatial, material, and socio-economic implications of extractive processes while creating a platform for reflection on the evolving relationship between architectural practice, material supply chains, procurement systems, and the often-distant locations from which construction materials originate. Through subversive gameplay mechanics and deliberately deadpan language, the project critiques the contemporary capitalist framework in which A small number of mining companies exert control over vast global networks and local landscapes.
