The liveliness of a city is embedded in the movements of its users and their actions. Thus, the activities of people in cities create emotional bonds with urban locations and facilitate the generation of embodied memories in city users. Embodied memory is a mental process: how city users feel and remember a city. However, the current development trends of cities break the deep emotional connections people have with their cities by disturbing their daily routines. Therefore, tracing and sustaining these embodied memory patterns has become vital in today’s rapidly changing urban contexts.

This study examines how the changes in spatial connectivity within the city influence the quality of embodied memory in the core city of Kandy. A combination of qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative methodologies was used in this study, including memory mapping using embodied memory techniques, spatial network connectivity measures, and correlation statistics. The research compared two contrasting sub-areas of Kandy.

Findings revealed a strong positive relationship between spatial connectivity and embodied memory. The research concludes that preserving well-connected pedestrian networks and sensorily enriched everyday environments are essential for sustaining embodied memory in rapidly transforming cities. These insights contribute to a scoring tool that identifies contexts where embodied memory is at risk and proposes design strategies that require future development projects to consider not only vehicle movement but also the invisible, people-centered layer of memory that makes each city unique.
