This dissertation explores how Hindu temple architecture in Sri Lanka creates profound emotional and cognitive responses through the integration of multiple sensory experiences, particularly among non-Hindu visitors. Focusing on the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in Jaffna and the Koneswaram Temple in Trincomalee, the research examines how spatial composition, materiality, light, sound, scent, texture, and movement interact to create immersive and meaningful architectural experiences. These sacred environments evoke feelings of awe, tranquility, introspection, and heightened awareness, revealing an emotional resonance that extends beyond religious boundaries.

The study investigates the role of traditional design systems, particularly Vastu Shastra and sacred geometry, in shaping spatial organization, perception, and emotional response. These principles inform spatial hierarchies, axial alignments, proportional systems, ornamentation, and processional movement, demonstrating how architecture can engage the senses while preserving cultural identity and ritual significance.

Using a qualitative methodology comprising case studies, semi-structured interviews, participant surveys, and detailed sensory observations, the research identifies key architectural strategies that enhance multisensory awareness and emotional engagement.

The outcome is a framework for applying multisensory design principles to contemporary architectural practice. By demonstrating the continued relevance of traditional knowledge systems, the dissertation offers an approach to creating inclusive, emotionally responsive, and culturally meaningful environments while preserving the identity and spiritual essence of sacred architecture.
