PlayCity: Translating Children's Perspectives into Urban Design Part 2 Dissertation 2026 Caitlin Flinn Robert Gordon University | UK PlayCity explores how children’s participatory outputs can be meaningfully translated into urban and architectural design outcomes. While methods such as drawing, model-making and discussion are effective in capturing children’s perspectives, a gap remains between children’s participation and the implementation of their ideas. Through literature review, case study analysis and participatory workshops with primary school children, this research identifies that existing translation approaches often rely on designer interpretation and fail to reflect children’s spatial experiences, particularly in relation to the organisation and relationship of spaces. In response, this dissertation proposes PlayCity: a child-friendly, step-by-step toolkit to support the translation of children’s ideas into design through a structured participatory process. By providing a replicable framework for practitioners, the research aims to strengthen children’s influence in urban and architectural design processes and contribute to meaningful and inclusive participatory practices.
