Energy at the Edge: Building an 'Energy Island' with Communities on Ynys Môn (The Isle of Anglesey)

This research is conducted within the community of Ynys Môn (The Isle of Anglesey), a predominantly rural island lying off the northwest coast of Wales in the Irish Sea. The thesis examines how community understanding and cultural power can play a vital role in the renewable energy transition on the island, and in the coining of the title ‘Energy IslandTM’, as a part of the ‘Energy Island Programme’ (2015). The study of culture within energy studies is an underexplored topic, specifically in relation to the Welsh and Ynys Môn condition. Rooted in local narratives, through interviews and conversations collected during island fieldwork, the project explores the dynamic relationship between environment, energy infrastructure and local communities – positing a broader approach to ‘energy’ to encompass the harnessing of cultural practices and lived experiences of energy, in ways similar to how we harness physical resources for power.

Through presenting a rich tapestry of local stories, this situated knowledge, underpins and aids the development of a framework of design principles and considerations, to inform the wider architectural design-research thesis. Ultimately calling for a renewed approach to the implementation of energy infrastructure, the thesis concludes in presenting a more nuanced, locally embedded and symbolic expression of ‘energy island’, inclusive of broader definitions of ‘energy’, community practices of ‘islandness’ and the co-design of sustainable development, as framed by the local community of Ynys Môn.
