The Town Architect Part 1 Project 2019 Tatiana Light Cardiff University | UK Questioning the role of the architect today, the project challenges the deterministic language of conservation planning, investigates its effect on place and through challenging its conventions, the potential this creates. Citing references in Luigi Snozzi’s lifetime of work in Monte Carasso, the long-term engagement of a Town Architect in Hay-on-Wye presents a new way of working as an architect, opportunistic rather than reactionary, establishing a unique relationship between the individual and collective. The transformation of a car park within the town centre creates a social forum where building rights are collectively questioned, tested and established, whilst also strengthening the relationship between surrounding public spaces and enhancing this heart of the town.
