A Library by the Sea

Part 2 Project 2019

This project proposes a satellite of the British Library in Scarborough, that focuses on the societal role of the library as a symbolic embodiment of knowledge and highlights its responsibility to provide access to information and learning. The role of a library has always been a facility for access to information, the sharing of knowledge and an institutional flagship that acts as the measure of how we value our education. The project is seen as both a public and specialist library and as a public exhibition space to introduce the public to an accessible academic environment. To change perceptions and instigate participatory change, we must strive to make our academic facilities open, community-engaged and raise the standard of expectation.

The project acknowledges that a library is much more than a storage unit for physical texts. A library must offer more than just books, it must act as a gateway to knowledge and culture by creating a place that facilitates and embodies ubiquitous knowledge through the connection between the information it makes accessible and the people accessing the information. The future of knowledge and education is tied up with our libraries and the invaluable exchange of information they facilitate.
