Part 2 Project 2019

Newhaven is a Sussex industrial town with a strong fishing/harbour community based along the West Quay riverbank of the River Ouse. The town’s fishing sites sit between the river and the back gardens of properties facing the town centre. However despite their geographical connection, Newhaven’s fishing jetties and the site’s private back gardens are fenced off, preventing local residents from interacting with local fishing activity. In contrast, Hasting’s historic fishery The Stade, is a borderless territory in which public and fishermen can use freely, giving space for residents to interact and learn about the town’s fishing historic community.
The project will question the potential of proposing a fish farming/fish processing university campus along West Quay’s “back spaces". Having identified the used and unused public and private territory in the area, the project will look to give freeholders a chance to rent out their unused private space to the university; to be used for the industry’s research and development. This will provide an opportunity to give Newhaven a new identity as a hub of research and innovation in connection to fish processing, medical, cosmetic and oil production industries; henceforth raising the social, economic and intellectual profile of Newhaven and it’s community.
