Agriculture in the City

Part 1 Project 2025

This project explores how architecture can foster a deeper connection between people, nature, and food through integrated growing spaces in an urban context. Set within Fish Island, the design centres around a biodiverse courtyard, shaped by strategic massing to maximise natural light and create ideal conditions for outdoor cultivation. The building integrates nature across all levels using raised beds, aquaponics systems, rooftop gardens, and biophilic art installations. A public café with outdoor seating activates the edge of a new park, drawing visitors in and encouraging casual engagement with the site’s growing and social functions.

As users move through the building, they encounter a layered spatial experience from exhibitions and learning spaces to hands-on workshops and communal growing areas on the upper floors. Reclaimed materials and exposed glulam structures express a commitment to sustainability and material honesty. Green roofs and carefully positioned circulation cores support multi-level access while softening the overall mass. The furniture echoes the rhythm of the prefabricated concrete façade, using the same language in form and texture, with timber elements adding warmth.

This architecture is used as a catalyst for curiosity, learning, and environmental awareness, encouraging people to grow, gather, and share within a nurturing urban setting.
