Choihung Estate, one of Hong Kong’s earliest public housing communities, is largely self- sufficient, with low blocks offering essential amenities. Its distinctive void spaces—tunnels, corners, and platforms—support daily activities like shopping, exercising, and socializing, fostering a strong community through shared, sometimes informally adapted, spaces. Inspired by these voids, the proposed ARTS AND arts centre reflects the estate’s vibrancy and spirit. The centre, located at the intersection of a low and a tall block, retains and adapts existing structures, with new steel elements minimizing load on the original framework.

ARTS AND integrates into daily life on Luk Lau Avenue and Choihung Road, near the bus terminal. It comprises the Low Block Studio, Tall Block Exhibition Hall, and Sunken Community Ground, maintaining the estate’s dynamic circulation. The low block hosts an open theatre, workshops, studios, and a library, fostering resident collaboration. The tall block’s height creates immersive vertical galleries connected by sweeping staircases.

By analyzing the estate’s void sections, the design reveals how these spaces connect people through simultaneous experiences, natural light, and layered spatial interactions. ARTS AND extends Choihung Estate’s community spirit, transforming voids into vibrant spaces that link people, activities, and stories.
