Soil, in many cultures, symbolises the cycles of life - fertility, birth, life and renewal. Its symbolic portrayal of the circuituation of the biosphere provides an interconnected paradigm of thought relating to that of creation, transformation and regeneration. Pottery, a derivation of soil, embodies the natural flows inherent in the act of creation. Born and shaped from the earth, ceramics carry the essence of fertility, they become a celebration of the earth and all it has to offer. Pottery stands as a medium of communicating but also of embodying memory. As the pottery returns to the ground it completes the cycle, regenerating the soil and symbolising.

The Earthen Passage examines the agency of architecture as a catalyst for social and spatial change, confronting the loss of cultural identity and memory in our urban landscapes. Through a hands-on process rooted in pottery, the project explores how the intimate act of making and craft can [re]connect us with place and memory by reshaping our relationships through social infrastructures. The project focuses on the natural cycle, a simultaneous celebration of life and of the earth’s generosity, explored through the art of ceramic extraction and creation.
