Reconnecting Lambeth

Part 1 Project 2025

An anti-demolition social housing scheme with a focus on tackling tenant displacement. This project provides an alternative solution to the redevelopment of South Lambeth Estate, highlighting how urban spaces can be improved with minimal intervention to the existing fabric of the site. The proposal is a pedestrianised estate that provides 178 council owned social housing with two different unit typologies. These typologies are formed of both extensions on the original structures which transform the small studio units into more generous one-bedroom flats, and two-bedroom units in the infill development. This provides varied options for those on the housing waiting lists.

The design strategy is for phased development, providing alternative accommodation on site in new infill units while existing structures undergo work for expansion and improvement.

Improved public space has been prioritised in the design, with evenly spaced courtyards taking the place of disused unattractive lawns, previously bordered by roads and parking, rendered inaccessible by extensive fencing.

The plans follow a medium-rise high density approach but there is scope for further expansion upwards, in select areas of the site.
