Solas Nibheis

Part 1 Project 2025

‘Solas Nibheis’, reimagines Fort William’s lost paper industry on a human scale through a new civic space for making, gathering, and storytelling. Once a major employer in the town, the closure of the Corpach paper mill left not only an economic gap but also a loss of spatial and cultural identity. Rather than revive industry, this project restores the spirit of papermaking as a craft.

The design centres around water, a key factor in both landscape and process. Rain is harvested from the swooping roofscape, inspired by the natural watershed of Ben Nevis, and reused in the papermaking cycle. The architecture draws from the materiality of paper. It is layered, light-filtering, and shaped by process. A perforated aluminium skin creates a soft boundary, protecting the privacy and calm while offering glimpses to the town.

The space invites both locals and tourists to connect through shared making. It offers an alternative to the tourist-focused high street by creating a place of quiet civic value. Through handmade forms, light, and water, the project reclaims a sense of identity for Fort William and creates new forms of community.
