Shandon Artist Hub and Studios Part 1 Project 2025 Amy Cotter University College Cork | Ireland My initial ambition in response to the brief was to engage with the rich artistic culture that exists within Cork City, and explore how this could catalyse the physical, social & cultural regeneration of Shandon.Shandon Artist Hub and Studios is a mixed-use, collaborative art centre, open to the public while providing a diverse range of facilities for Sample-Studios, one of Ireland’s largest art studios who are currently seeking a city central home. With an existing complex of warehouses across two levels, a central external stairway creates an exciting, active pedestrian route connecting the wider community of Shandon to the city and to the artistic activity within the centre. The scheme celebrates a sense of eclecticism in its existing and new interventions, an ode to the varied architectural typologies found across Shandon. Each block has a unique character while together creating a coherent collection of architectural typologies. The new builds are designed with circularity in mind, with a reversible CLT structure and adaptable spatial conditions to suit future changing needs. Unique ceramic cladding systems designed by the artists themselves intrinsically connect the centre’s design process, artistic functions and finished form, with the potential of stimulating further regeneration within the area.
