Exchange Gallery Doncaster

Part 1 Project 2025

University of Sheffield | UK
A retrofit scheme to revitalise an old canal depot into a cultural centre for Doncaster. Forged artwork is housed in the gallery spaces, and its 'authenticity' inspires the architecture - the existing building is partly rigorously retrofitted and partly exposed to the elements.

The central exterior ‘heartspace’ of the building opens the existing skin and structure to be viewed more closely, celebrating its robust quality. Inside, the curation of views onto and around the artwork fosters an enhanced appreciation for creativity. The structure is concealed, and it is unclear what is existing and what is new - questioning the authenticity of the building, just like the artwork within it.

The forgery and making process extends to new-build workshop and congregation facilities - here, the exchange of creative knowledge and ideas fosters a thriving community. Furthermore, archive and study spaces lead to a rejuvenation of creative interest for the nearby Doncaster College.
