The Friday market of Cairo’s Sayida Aisha is one of the city’s oldest informal street markets, where it is a bazaar filled with everything from antiques and secondhand goods to living pets and animals. It is located within one of Cairo’s largest historical cemeteries. Every Friday the alleys of the Sayida Aisha bustle with peculiar contradictions between the living and the dead… the loud and the silent.

In 2023, authorities began demolishing the historical site to construct an infrastructural project of flyovers. All appeals to revise these plans were met with more aggressive erasure and demolition measures. In 2025, the project was paused with the flyover uncompleted.

The project proposes an alternative vision for the abandoned infrastructure. The structure and its surroundings are transformed into a biodiversity corridor for the city, thus reviving the historical market and celebrating the diverse ecosystem of the site. Nature is carefully allowed to reclaim the area… plants create natural habitats where birds find refuge in the forgotten gaps, timber nests are introduced as new shelters for strays and humans return, transforming the fly-over into a vibrant ecosystem. The abandoned relic, once constructed to ease traffic congestion, evolves into a vertical garden for the city.
