RunRig: An agricultural observatory

Part 1 Project 2025

Located in Ardnamurchan, the westernmost point of mainland Scotland, this project responds to the area’s agricultural past. The site still shows traces of the historic RunRig system—a form of communal land use—which forms the basis for a design focused on collective growing and working together.

At the heart of the project is a modular, lightweight steel structure. Inspired by shelving systems, it allows for easy expansion, storage, and reconfiguration. This flexibility supports changing needs over time and encourages users to adapt the space themselves. The greenhouse becomes both a productive and social place—a setting for growing plants, sharing skills, and exchanging ideas.

The design is largely self-sufficient. It includes a small river turbine, a rainwater collection system, and a water tower placed beside an old water wheel. A bridge leads across the river, guiding visitors through a gate that marks the shift from private to public land and symbolises openness and connection.

The project treating architecture as a tool for participation, learning, and change. It avoids fixed solutions and instead provides a framework that can grow with its users. Low-tech, adaptable systems support both environmental awareness and community use.

By combining historic land use practices with a flexible, modern structure, the project creates a space that looks to the future while remaining grounded in its context.
