We Are but Visitors Here...

Part 1 Project 2025

Current models of urban development often erase existing characteristics to erect slick, commodified architecture. This cleansing approach has contributed to a widespread loss in biodiversity, and a detachment between humans and the natural world, posing increasing dangers amidst the climate crisis.

In Mayfield, Manchester, a guarded brownfield site sits among those selected for regeneration. Following the strange slow processes already unfolding across Mayfield’s postindustrial landscape, this project responds not in opposition, but in parallel to the regeneration.

The proposed architecture is not imposed on the site but emerges from what exists. Salvaged materials from demolished warehouses form a decaying tower, acting as a monument to Mayfield's industrial past and a sanctuary for non-human species. Openings appear without hierarchy, creating an architectural ecosystem with no species in control. Irregular pathways spiral around and within the structure, guiding visitors to preserve coexistence. Along the site's edge, a removable research center tracks ecological change, its lifespan shaped by human interaction, reminding users of our role as visitors.

Rooted in temporality and coexistence, instead of erasing Mayfield’s past, the project seeks transformation through slower rhythms, inviting the city to remember, to wait, and to imagine regeneration not as replacement, but as continuation.
