Paper Hub: Recycle, create, build

Part 1 Project 2025

The project ‘Paper Hub: Recycle, create, build’ imagines a community recycling centre in Hackney Wick, fabricated entirely from paper and cardboard. Within the context of Hackney Wick and the people who occupy the region, the use of recycled materials isn’t so alien. The region itself has seen projects like Hub 67 which had been built by the community using recycled materials from the Olympics. The project developed through the use of Shigeru Bans paper tubes methodology; whereby paper tubes became the structural frame of the building connected by joints for the ease of disassembly. Through my technical report, I was able to mould paper pulp into ceiling, wall and floor panels which could then be fitted to the structural frame with joints going through the tubes. It became apparent that paper could be moulded into any shapes / sizes which aligned with the building's goal for the community to design new moulds, allowing them to change the envelope of the building. The buildings function of recycling and moulding paper acts as a tool to educate and involve the local community in the process so that the importance of recycling and repairing products is known and can be repeated in the future.
