Lines of the Caucasus - Museum of Contemporary Art Part 1 Project 2025 Firangiz Balayeva Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction | Azerbaijan Young people have few places to connect with art beyond their school walls and this project aims to change that by introducing a contemporary art museum that not only broadens students’ and locals’ exposure to creativity but also contributes to the tourism in the region.Balakan, located in the Greater Caucasus Mountains and on the national border has the potential to attract visitors. The site spans an area of six hectares. Its proximity to the Balakan River, which flows nearby, adds a natural element to the urban setting. Surrounded by the Greater Caucasus Mountains, the museum becomes a part of the natural ecosystem, with its roof dancing to the rhythm of the surrounding slopes. The idea was not to compete with the mountains but to enter a dialogue with them, creating a harmony between built form and slope lines of the Caucasus.Considering logistics, access routes, exhibition flow, and staff areas was a key part of the design process. As a result, the museum offers a well- organized and accessible layout that supports a variety of activities, including indoor exhibitions, a film screening zone, open-air art displays, and a sculpture garden.
