The Hatchery – Cultivating Blue Science, Growing Green Solutions is a multi-purpose environmental research facility supporting the Blue Marine Foundation’s Oyster Restoration Project. Conceived as a “farm for ideas,” it brings together researchers, students, and the wider community to promote marine conservation and sustainable behaviours.

Located at Camber Point, Old Portsmouth, the building functions as a civic landmark and ecological hub. Its design is organised into three integrated layers: a publicly accessible ground level with a glazed oyster hatchery and marine aquarium for immersive education; a mezzanine housing research labs for the University of Portsmouth; and upper levels offering residential space for PhD students, professors, and visiting researchers. This layered arrangement fosters interdisciplinary exchange and long-term collaboration.

Architecturally, the structure draws from oyster reefs and marine infrastructure - balancing organic growth with resilience. Initially inspired by modular capsule architecture, the final design adopts a prefabricated system that allows future expansion through ring beams and pods, reflecting the building’s evolving identity over time.

Balancing ambition with deliverability, The Hatchery demonstrates that innovation in architecture lies not only in form but in adaptability, sustainability, and storytelling - creating a space that can grow, teach, and endure.
