Identity and Broadwater Farm Estate Part 2 Dissertation 2023 Akramul Azur Askaari London South Bank University | UK This dissertation focuses on estates across Britain, which have been confronted by criticism and stigmatisation, forming a negative identity for these places. Broadwater Farm Estate is a social housing estate situated in London, Tottenham, which will be used a case study to explore how negative stereotypes can form the identity of an estate. Currently, the estate is under a regeneration scheme, thus will help identify the built environment’s role in reshaping the identity.The objective is to investigate how architecture, media and community have shaped the identity of Broadwater Farm Estate; and whether contemporary architects have any influence in reshaping it.Using architectural determinist theories, the aim is to identify key architectural components that have shaped how residents at Broadwater Farm respond to the design. Interviews with the architects who worked on the regeneration scheme will unveil how the theories align with modern design implementations and understand the intention behind the design and whether these components may have an impact on creating a safer and healthier neighbourhood. Additionally, interviews with residents will help understand how the community feels towards the portrayal of Broadwater Farm in the media and how they are responding to these stories through a variety of mediums.
