Houses today are rigid; fixed into a set plan. However the number of single-person households is steadily increasing. Moreover, the already changing dynamics of ‘family’ are becoming further malleable as family relations change in accordance with our life cycle. In response to this phenomenon, I would like to propose a Flexible House which can reciprocate this change.

Currently, there are three main issues
1. The Disintegration of the Family
2. New Lifestyles in Everydayness
3. Disconnection between People
Based on thee three issues, the majority of houses in Korea are rigid.

Recently, apartments built in the 1970’s and 1980’s are being reconstructed. Among many others, I would like to renovate Banpo Apartments to create a prototype of residential space for single-person households.

The specific needs of individuals differ greatly, and the spaces of each individual can only reflect this difference. Thus, by setting only the basic framework I plan to liberate the rest of the space; creating a space susceptible to the individuals use. It is up to them to decide what activities will occupy the shared spaces; of which spaces could become a kitchen, a library, a small movie theater, a studio, a bathroom, an outdoor terrace, a gym, etc.
