The Gasworks Part 1 Project 2023 Joseph Nicholson Loughborough University | UK The project draws inspiration from a period of industrial innovation, where a former gasworks enabled the site to be coined ‘Dainite’ for its ability to work through the night. Building upon the historic significance of gas as a catalyst, a narrative has been woven around this heritage, reintroducing gas to once again shift the character of the town, towards a new sustainable identity. The waste-to-energy facilities utilize a process called 'Gasification,' which exemplifies sustainable energy generation.The narrative was led by the cradle-to-cradle concept, developing an awareness of the entire lifecycle of a component. The building’s form and programme are derived from these cycles, reinstating the gasholder to create a familiar symbol of industry as the town embarks on a sustainable revolution. All aspects follow a theme of disseminating resource consciousness, accompanying the project with a material passport, a document recording all components and their source.The proposal carefully considers the historic significance of a Grade II listed building. Introducing a winter garden to maintain its existing state and celebrate its unique features. The proposal embodies the regenerate nature aspect of the circular economy, representing a positive outcome of waste-to-energy, heating the site with the steam of the reaction process.
