The Waterside Workshop Part 2 Project 2023 Luke Collinson University of Reading | UK The Waterside Workshop is a Brown and Rainbow trout fly fishery that aims to target mental health and loneliness within local communities, particularly within the ageing community of Midsomer Norton, Somerset. The project is linked to the neighbouring Welton Free Rangers Nursery School that promotes outdoor and nature-focused learning.Material reuse and sustainability are central to the project. The Waterside Workshop achieves this through the inventive re-purposing of materials, such as re-using earth dug up to create the trout pools within the construction of rammed earth walls that compose the main structure. Furthermore, bamboo, which is grown on- site for the construction, celebrates the craft of curating split cane bamboo rods, providing a connection between the programme and the architecture.The architecture aims to blend into the natural environment through the material pallet of rammed earth and bamboo, balancing heavy- and light-weight structures, which define the project.Overall, The Waterside Workshop aims to provide a space for people to connect with nature, build community connections, celebrate sustainable design, and enjoy the simple pleasures of fly fishing, rod crafting, and cooking.
