From Figure-Ground to Figure-Figure: Conversion of the Building-Void Conjunction in Maestranza San Eugenio through the Encounter of Notable Figures Part 2 Project 2023 Antonia Sofía Ocares Yáñez Pontifical Catholic University of Chile | Chile Considering Maestranza San Eugenio (MSE) as a notable urban piece and a city-shaping element, the purpose of this project is, on one hand, to recognize that it is also composed of unique pieces whose associative logics stem from a functional mandate determined by the railway, pieces that can be considered as primary elements in urbanization; and on the other hand, that it is possible to generate public space through the summation of notable architectural figures, as a different approach from the logic of subordination to a pre-existing urban structure like the grid, an approach that finds urban generation clues in the figure-figure scheme proposed in Piranesi's Campo Marzio. Thus, the building-void conjunction is recomposed through the collage method as a representation and a tool to comprehend the city.The project revalues the interstitial spaces resulting from the arrangement of these notable pieces on the site – and their particular configurations – understanding these spaces as relevant elements of mediation and negotiation in the encounter between the pieces and the city and its preexisting elements. Likewise, the potentialities and limitations of a projective and speculative approach are noted, where the process takes on special relevance in the project.
