The Phyto-Factory

Part 2 Project 2023

The project explores 'urban phytoremediation' - the process of using plants to remove toxic contaminants from the built environment - as an alternative to the rapid development associated with Copenhagen's post-industrial sites. The various rails and cranes that once informed a past strategy of movement and production were operationalized for high-intensity 'pixel farming' to enable precise and targeted remediation efforts. The byproducts of these farms open up critical research and commercial opportunities that are informed by Refshaleøen's established culture of making and research-based enterprises.

At the heart of the new urban forest sits The Phyto-Factory, which is retrofitted within a historic shipbuilding warehouse to process timber and biomass as phytoremediation by-products. The building encompasses the urban forest as a key design driver, elevating spaces and walkways above the remediating factory floor. The factory integrates within the remediating landscape as a new public monument and becomes the heart of the cooperative stewardship of a post-industrial landscape into a sustainable future.
