Carved to Breath – Ski Resort

Part 2 Project 2025

Set at 2000 meters in the Cedars of Bsharri, this project reimagines the future of mountain tourism in Lebanon by transforming a traditional ski resort into a sustainable, year-round destination. In response to climate instability and declining winter visitors, the design embraces the theme of breathing architecture through digging into the mountain. The resort is carved into the natural terrain to minimize its visual and environmental impact, while enhancing thermal performance and energy efficiency.

The project is shaped by site-specific climate simulations and passive environmental strategies. It features a kinetic origami-inspired roof, adaptive facades, and an underground courtyard that brings daylight and ventilation deep into the structure. Functional zones include residential, wellness, cultural, sports, and entertainment programs—all connected by a protected indoor circulation spine.

Locally sourced cedar wood and stone root the architecture in its context, while geothermal insulation and rainwater harvesting reduce environmental impact. Beyond design performance, the resort supports local craft, boosts the regional economy, and extends the tourism season.
This project is not just a building—it is a landscape that lives, breathes, and adapts. It reflects a vision where architecture becomes a bridge between nature, culture, and climate resilience.
