Palimpsest of the Liminal

Part 1 Project 2025

'Palimpsest of the Liminal' reinterprets Liverpool’s historic maritime edge as a layered response to the city’s evolving social, cultural, and urban identity. It reflects on the fractured connection between the city and its docks,
acknowledging Liverpool’s maritime heritage, public health challenges, and the broader consequences of its post- industrial decline. The city’s loss of UNESCO World Heritage Status, amid unchecked commercial development and weakened planning oversight, exemplifies the urgent need to reimagine its relationship with the waterfront.

The docks-once central to Liverpool’s civic and economic life-have become increasingly inaccessible due to private ownership. This project proposes a new architectural strategy for the post- industrial threshold, prioritising wellness, accessibility, and collective ownership to re-establish a sense of belonging.

Internally, the scheme evokes Liverpool’s industrial past through vast, uplifting volumes. Suspended pods offer intimate spaces for reflection and social interaction within a larger communal setting. Externally, the design draws from the industrial vernacular, using a rhythmic
sequence of arched forms. These evolve from historic patterns into bold, sculptural elements, introducing deliberate disruption.

The resulting architecture balances contextual sensitivity with landmark ambition-reclaiming a long-neglected part of the city as a dynamic, inclusive public space.
