Weaving the Gomera Palm

Part 2 Project 2025
Manuel Alexander Fustamante Mori
CEU San Pablo University Madrid | Spain
The proposal arises with the aim of revitalising traditional life in La Gomera, preserving and promoting its culture, gastronomy, and craftsmanship. Located in the northern part of the island, specifically in the village of Los Loros, the proposal focuses on a centre for artisanal trades specialised in basketry using wicker, cane, and palm leaves, along with a second area devoted to the production of palm honey.

The spatial programme unfolds as a linear sequence of structures that disperse and coexist with the landscape, occupying and reclaiming existing ruins to generate open- air spaces linked to specific stages of the artisanal process.

The project highlights the full lifecycle of the palm, from harvesting to the creation of handcrafted objects, including its application in architectural elements of the project. The architecture integrates traditional building features that respect and reflect local culture, employing native materials and vernacular construction techniques. This is expressed through a woven textile skin, functioning as a latticework that envelops the workshops crafted by local artisans themselves. It stands as a living tribute to the Gomera identity, and an open invitation to weave, with every gesture.
