Beet LOOP

Part 1 Project 2025

Beet LOOP reimagines Osney Mead, an industrial park in Oxford, as a living lab where beetroot farming, pigment research, craft, and dining flow in one continuous cycle. The modular timber structure sits lightly among undulating beetroot beds, blurring the line between landscape and building.

Harvested beetroots move directly into wet labs, where pigments are extracted and transformed. These rich colours feed dye workshops and reappear on fabrics and plates in a rooftop restaurant overlooking the fields. Made from prefabricated glulam and bioplastic elements, the building is designed for easy disassembly and flexible modular reconfiguration, adapting to changing programs and seasonal needs while reducing embodied carbon and waste.

More than a research centre, Beet LOOP is a thriving community hub where local chefs, scientists and creatives come together to teach, share skills and spark ideas. Members of the community can learn about the time, care and innovation behind food production, crop research, natural dyes, and circular design. By showcasing multiple uses for a single crop, from cooking to pigment to recycling waste, Beet LOOP reconnects people to making processes often forgotten in modern life, inspiring new generations to value resourcefulness, collaboration and a more sustainable future.
