The Orchard Library

Part 1 Project 2025

The Orchard Library aims to emphasise the importance of public buildings with a prominent community library located in Glasgow’s City Centre. Bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary libraries, the building has a range of environments, focussing on materiality and light with a sensitive approach to the site context and character.

Located in Glasgow’s historic Merchant City, the library would transform a former brownfield site, once part of the Fruitmarket, into a vibrant civic space. Merchant City, following a medieval town plan, has evolved since the 18th century into a culturally rich area with diverse architectural styles. The new library and public garden would enhance urban green space and contribute to the area’s identity.

Designed with a community focus, the building includes a small theatre, classroom, café, and exhibition hall, encouraging learning, creativity, and engagement. Positioned to preserve a prominent mural and allow for future artworks, it would enhance the public realm and strengthen connections to the existing urban fabric through partnerships involving local charities, universities and cultural organisations.
