Patuakhali Maggi presents a critical design project that interrogates the relationship between Bangladesh and its female population. This project questions how a female run country has no focus on rights, education and opportunities for women and girls. First hand experience highlighted how girls as young as ten are forced into the world of prostitution so that themselves and their families are able to survive on a day-to-day basis. Further research showed how it is left to international organisations to intervene when the Bangladeshi government has almost turned a blind eye to the future of its female population. The stigma around prostitution meant that these girls could not mix with people from the same community, so giving them a place where they can get an education and learn skills, would then help them to get out of the industry they are a part of.

Drawings inspired by Mies Van der Rohe and Peter Zumthor were used as a thought process. The drawings became design language, which informed the design process and they became a playful form of research without any restrictions. It gave me the freedom of pursuing composition, light and movement, which then evolved into developing the program and the scheme.
