About
The Architectural Association School of Architecture is an independent school. It has an international student body and maintains close ties with the architectural profession, both in this country and overseas through its teaching staff, lectures and Association membership.
In addition to the five-year RIBA/ARB-recognised course, the AA also offers a one year Foundation course that gives students the opportunity to develop a range of skills while testing their aptitude for architecture and the design professions in general.
The five-year course is divided into an introductory first Year, a two-year Intermediate School (RIBA/ARB Part 1) and a two-year Diploma School (RIBA/ARB Part 2 and the AA Diploma). Students work in design units that represent a diversity of architectural approaches and ideas. In parallel with the unit work, three primary areas of study are covered in taught courses within the Complementary Studies Departments. Contemporary issues in history and theory are developed within the Histories and Theories Department. Construction, environmental design and new technologies are explored in Technical Studies Department. Communications fosters skills in representation in a variety of media within the Media Studies Department.
The AA’s eleven Post-graduate programmes offer advanced studies in one of the world's most dynamic learning environments. Full time masters programmes include 12 month MA and MSc and 16 month MArch options Although there are workshops and design projects linked to these programmes, the main means of investigation is through writing and analysis. By contrast, design is the main focus of the Graduate Design programmes which are all studio based, with supplementary seminars and workshops. The AA's PhD programme fosters critical discourse and innovative research in the fields of architecture and urbanism. For the 2010/2011 Academic Year the AA will launch two new full time Graduate programmes: MArch in "Design and Make" located at the AA's Hooke Park forest estate in Dorset and a two year full time M.Phil programme in "Projective Cities".
Further information on all programmes can be accessed through the AA's website:
