About
The School of the Built Environment at the University of Nottingham provides a professional, vibrant and exciting environment for the study and research of architecture and related disciplines. The ARB / RIBA validated courses account for the majority of students in the school but a key school aim is to foster a multi-disciplinary culture within which all students can thrive. In addition, the School offers a non-vocational BA (Hons) degree course in Architectural Studies and a CIBSE-recognised BEng degree in Architectural Environmental Engineering. At postgraduate level the School offers a range of eleven non-accredited masters-level degrees. At present, six of these courses share some aspect of the taught programme with the two-year Diploma in Architecture, making for a lively, international and cross-disciplinary environment. The school also has a strong PhD programme.
The Institute of Architecture aims to deliver pluralistic programmes of study that are informed by high quality research conducted within the School. As such, the Institute aims to:
· Deliver a balanced architectural education involving intellectual and design rigour together with preparation for practice;
· Develop graduates who demonstrate excellence in architectural design, have extensive problemsolving skills and illustrate a strong awareness of the environmental and social challenges facing society; and
· Undertake internationally recognised and architectural and multi-disciplinary research, which in turn will inform the teaching programmes.
The Institute and the University have also demonstrated their commitment to design quality and engagement with architectural practice with the appointment of number special professors who are world-leading practitioners in architecture and engineering. These include Ted Cullinan, winner of the 2008 RIBA Royal Gold Medal, Peter Clegg, Tim MacFarlane and Mark Whitby.
