About
The School is a Department of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art within the University. All students are in residence in the University and are members of a college. In common with other schools the Department teaches a studio-based three-year degree course which provides a basic education in architecture, but supervisions, which provide tuition individually or in small groups, are also arranged through the Colleges to reinforce an extensive lecture programme in theoretical, historical and technical areas of the subject. These may involve teachers from other disciplines within the University. The School has one of the finest architectural libraries in the country. Although the Diploma in Architecture is not currently offered, postgraduate work may be pursued via a one-year MPhil degree in Environmental Design in Architecture, which draws on the specialist knowledge and interest of teachers within the Department. Two streams are now offered, one which involves the production of a thesis ‘by research’ and the other which allows the development of a thesis ‘by design’. Further information about this course is given on the Department website (www.arct.cam.ac.uk) and the application form can be found on-line in the University's Graduate Studies Prospectus, www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/ Applications for the MPhil course should normally be submitted to the Board of Graduate Studies (4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ) by 31 January of the year of commencement of study but depending on circumstances late applications may also be considered . Research work at post-graduate level is organised within the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies, one of the most important architectural research centres in the country. This work can take the form of individual research on historical, theoretical or technical subjects on the one hand and major projects sponsored by government grants on the other. Further information about the Martin Centre is given on the Department website.
